Star Wars Nursery - Completed

So its done.

It has been done for a while (2 weeks or so) but I was holding off till it was as perfect as it was going to be.

Just as a reminder, here is what it looked like at the start of the project.
Days after we got the books shelves out of the office, and then took down the fake wood panels.

So now, after getting all the walls fixed, furniture moved in and cleaned up. Baby clothing folded and everything where it needs to be.

Yep, we went that far.

There will be no Jar-Jar on these sacred walls.

Hard to see but those are hand made star-field curtains in the background.

Shelving filled with necessary infant stuff.

Red 5 about to take out Tie Fighter #73

Luke doing an unauthorized flyby of the tower...

With all the kits we have gotten recently I have a good number of new Star Wars figures, as well as some donated by a co-worker of mine.

If you want to see more of the  "how did we get here" process, please check out the other posts in this blog.  Though I don't expect to have many more large projects in the next month or two, I will work to make sure I document what I'm doing.

Thanks for checking it out, and add a comment or suggestion on other things I could add to the room!

Nursery - Painting complete

So at this point I have a 2nd coat of gray on the walls behind and next to the door of the room, and got blue on the 2 walls by the windows.

I vacuumed the floor and only need to work on cutting the floor trim with the miter saw.
Here are a few snap shots of what I got done so far.

Blue...   The color of...  blue... stuff...  yeah..

The gray is nice and solid, this is the wall where the Imperial symbol is going to be.

This blue area is going to be where the rebel symbol will be.

Slowly but surely I will have this room completed and then we can start on the next project... which with a newborn will never get completed at all....

This child owes me one weekend of his life for every hour of labor put into this bedroom.

So Jeff came over on Saturday and the indentured servitude began in earnest.

Moments before the project started.  Wallpaper and wall damage, trying to tag team against us.

From 5:30 pm - 8:45 pm   we worked on simply removing the wallpaper on the 2 undamaged walls.
I have a Wallpaper steamer, but it didn't work very well on these walls.  I did use the wallpaper scorcher, but it had no real effect.

So though it sounds tedious, I ended up ripping the top layer of the wall paper off.... of all of the walls.  I can be amused with little projects like this though so it wasn't as bad as it sounded. Often it would come off is great paper sheets.

After that the steamer worked a little better but I noticed that the glued on paper came off the best where water was building up I turned off the steamer, and filled a water bottle up with warm water.   It was like we were going in turbo speed after that. Some areas where the glue was the strongest stayed regardless of how much we worked on it but in the end the walls came out nice and smooth. The paint under it though had that weathered cracked look to it.

The next morning Jeff came over first thing and we started sanding down the walls and the damaged areas.
Then we applied some Gardz to it.
It soaked right into the paper acting as to seal so the moisture in the joint compound wouldn't soak into the paper on the sheetrock and end up causing moisture bubbles.

Then we coated everything in the joint compound the best we could and poof!

Looks like we just shot twinkies at the wall with a machinegun.

Covered in joint compound after we sealed it.... also the spot next to the chair apparently was our blind spot.

Apparently we forgot to cover a section of the wall, cuz well i have no idea why...  so that and a little section near the ceiling needed to be address and given 24 hours to set.

Jeff paid his time and left to enjoy what was left of his weekend. I spent the next 3 hours priming the room.
Did I ever tell you how much I don't really like painting? So thats a thing.
The corner, you can still see yellow a bit, but it will be covered in blue so should be ok.

A WIP shot

With the Primer (There is the small section that I needed to patch.)
But she doesn't look too bad.

Starting the boys bedroom. Oh the Horror...

Hi, My name is Matt.   This Blog is going to be more a chronicling of my house projects.   We are currently in Year 2 of 10 in our home, and I will go back and recap most of the other projects we have worked on

Funny thing house projects, you start them with the best of intentions, and typically end them with either a feeling of great satisfaction, or utter dread.

I'm what I consider a preferential perfectionist.  82.33333~% of the time I could care less about random details.  I'm rather laid back, but the second I start a project I want it to be perfect, and it is NEVER... EVER good enough.
It's ok.... its not bad.  But it isn't good, and could be WAY better then it is. My wife loves our daughters room, and she

I started working projects 2 years ago when I bought the house.  And oh the projects I have worked on.
But I only recently started documenting what I have been doing. So here we are... starting the boy's bedroom.

So my wife went and got herself pregnant with my son.  My job (other than being a good father and keeping everyone alive) is to make the most awesome boys nursery I possibly can.

First to review the room itself.

Originally it was the office with all our movies and bookshelves and computers for the last 2 years it has been where we did our bills and played computer games.
Located in the North Western portion of the house, its cool in the morning but can get very hot in the late afternoon as the sun basically bakes the front of our house.

2 of the 5 walls have Wood panels on them. This room sits at the end of the hall way and cuts in a little which is where the 5th wall comes into play.

Here is the first before picture.  Not bad, you can see the wall paper that surrounds the other 3 walls.

This is the 2nd wall

This was the foreshadowing of what was to come.

And the after...  Shit.

Well, maybe it was just that one...   oh..

The customary tossing of the wall panels.  That's what I called it at least.

So here is the game plan.   After spending the better part of Saturday, literally angry cuz I wasn't sure the best way to proceed, I ended up just going to Mendards, and ending up catching Jeff right at the end of his shift.  He found one of the resident experts who suggested we do the following.

1) Sand down the areas and remove excess glue still on the walls.
2) Seal the damaged drywall paper with Gardz, this basically will prevent moisture from getting into the paper of the Sheetrock and bubbling up causing the obvious problems there.
3) Next we will use joint compound to smooth out ALL of the damage...
4) Sanding things to be even...
5) Prime
6) ?????
7) Profit

So, I will try and document each of these steps, and we will see.

Let me know what you think.   Cuz the other option is pretty much breaking down the walls and installing new sheetrock. Which While is not a difficult project... its just overwhelming to me right now.
